A Case Study on Long-term Sand Play Therapy for a Child with Oppositional Defiant Disorder

Abstract
This case study intended to investigate the changes, through the intervention of long-term sand play therapy, in insight of a interviewed child, who has difficulty controlling anger and studying because he is distracted and impulsive, and requested psychological treatment on the major problems with significant others including his own mother, with regard to thinking ability, mentality, emotional behavior, relationship between parents and child and social relationship. As the result of this study, the interviewed child showed positive changes in overall major problems; he could look into his own suppressed and accumulated emotions of anxiety and anger, and experienced changes in individual and emotionally maladjusted behaviors such as lack of control on anger and distractedness; and he also reported relational improvement with significant others including his mother. Therefore, it became obvious that long-term sand play therapy could have positive effect on emotion and behavioral change of child who currently externalize emotionally maladjusted behaviors. Lastly, limitations of results in this case study and direction for future research were discussed.
